One Sushi

We promise we’re not reviewing Wellington eateries in alphabetical order – it’s purely a coincidence that our first two reviews are of places called “One-something”.

One Sushi is one of my favourites, mostly because it’s excellent value for money.  The sushi itself is alright, but nothing spectacular – I’d say it’s above average if value for money is taken into account, but if price is not important to you, you can definitely find better sushi elsewhere (Hey Sushi on Dixon St nearby has superior sushi, but at noticeably higher prices).

At One sushi, you get to pick and choose your sushi.  They also have some pre-packed boxes for around $5-6.50 if you’re in a hurry though – these usually contain the cheaper types of sushi (e.g. chicken, vegetarian, etc).  The sushi prices are $1/$1.10 for the cheaper types of sushi (vegetarian, chicken, pork katsu, shrimp katsu, deep fried sushi) to $1.50 for the more expensive types of sushi (salmon and avocado, salmon/tuna and eel nigiri).  Their nigiri is not exactly stunning quality, but at $1.50, they’re probably the cheapest you’ll get in Wellington central.  They also have a few pieces of pre-prepared hot food for around $1.50-$2.50 each – gyoza, takoyaki, fried fish, korokke (potato croquette).

The sushi is Kiwi-style – that is, they’re big pieces.  You could get a decent lunch here for only $6.  What’s more, after 3pm their sushi gets discounted! The $1/1.10 ones go to 70c each and the $1.50 ones go down to 90c.  It’s often better value to go in and pick and choose at this time than to get the pre-prepared boxes.  By about 6pm though, the pick and choose option is usually gone (or almost gone), unfortunately.

Yesterday arvo, Demi and I went to get some discounted sushi at about 4pm.  I got a pack of 7 pieces for $5.50, pictured above. Demi got the enormous pile below for only $7.70!

We had to eat there since Demi couldn’t even close her takeaway box! A sushi feast for less than $8

We also sampled some of their hot food – two gyoza on a stick for $2, and a potato korokke for $1.50.  The gyoza was quite nice, but the potato korokke was sweeter than I had expected and a bit dry.  Not something I would get again.

Service is pretty average – fast, but not particularly friendly.  The staff are all quite good at math though, and I’ve never been overcharged (or undercharged, for that matter).  They now take credit card, as well as EFTPOS.

This is primarily a takeaway place so there’s not much as far as ambience goes.  There are about 3 tables for two that you can sit down at for eating your sushi – if it’s a nice day, you’re better off just sitting on Cuba St somewhere.
